Interior Door Installation & Repair

Interior door repair comparison showing an uneven door reveal before adjustment and an aligned door afterward

A bedroom door that scrapes the frame, a bathroom door that will not stay closed, or a latch that needs an extra push can make an otherwise comfortable room frustrating to use. Interior door repair starts by finding where the movement or fit has changed. The door slab, hinges, jamb, latch and surrounding finish each play a different part; replacing a knob alone does not always solve the problem.

Keystone Handyman reviews the actual door at your working visit and explains the repair options and price before you approve the work. Your list can include one troublesome door or several interior doors, with the symptoms recorded separately so the right details get attention.

We look at the gap around the closed door, where the edge rubs, how the slab moves through its swing, and whether the latch meets the strike plate. Loose hinge fasteners, worn hardware, paint buildup and a door that no longer sits square can create similar symptoms. Visible frame movement or recurring changes may call for a different next step; an adjustment is not presented as a cure for an unresolved building movement problem.

Depending on the condition, agreed repairs may include securing a loose hinge, addressing a worn screw fixing, adjusting the hinge position, or fitting compatible replacement hinges. The fastening surface matters as much as the hardware: screws need suitable support in the door and jamb. We assess that support before deciding how to restore a dependable fixing.

Questions about interior door installation & repair

Can a door that drags on the floor simply be trimmed?

Sometimes, but trimming is not automatically the right repair. We first consider hinge security, alignment, the type of door and the flooring clearance. The construction may limit how much material can be removed.

Do I need to buy hinges or a new handle first?

You can show us products you already have, but the door and hardware measurements need to match. If the cause is uncertain, the onsite review can help avoid buying a component that does not address it.

Can you work on several interior doors in one visit?

List each door and its symptoms. We review the tasks and explain the scope, priorities and price together. The number of doors, required parts and any finish work determine what can be completed during the visit.

Does the repair include repainting the whole door?

Only if that finish work is part of the approved scope. We discuss visible marks and altered hardware positions before work begins, including when a wider painting area may provide a more consistent finish.
