Fence & Gate

Custom Gate Building

Illustrative custom gate comparison: weathered dog-ear fence with open gateway before, taller cedar arched gate with diamond lattice and fence rot boards after

A custom gate starts with the way you need to move through an opening. Everyday foot access, carrying larger items and the available swing area can lead to different design choices. Keystone Handyman provides custom gate building by discussing that use alongside the opening, materials and supporting arrangement, so the proposed gate has a practical purpose as well as an appearance you want.

Building a new gate is different from adjusting an existing one or replacing its latch. The project needs clear choices about dimensions, layout, construction, hardware and what will remain around it. An existing fence may be retained, but its condition and connection to the new work still matter. We do not assume that every current post or opening is suitable for any gate design.

You can begin with the problem you want the new gate to solve rather than a finished drawing. During the working visit, we review the location and intended result, discuss suitable materials and the work involved, and explain the scope and price before approval. Support changes, finish stages and other additional work need to be identified as part of the project rather than left as assumptions.

For custom gate building, the agreed work can include onsite discussion of intended passage, location and design goals; material, layout and hardware choices for the agreed gate; construction and installation of the defined custom gate; specified support and connection work where included; normal operating checks and agreed finish or surrounding restoration. We confirm the included tasks, materials and price with you before work begins.

Questions about custom gate building

Do I need a completed design first?

No. Explain the intended use and preferences. We can discuss layout and materials onsite before defining the work and price.

Can the existing posts be reused?

Only if their condition and suitability support the agreed design. Retaining them is a choice to assess, not an automatic part of every custom build.

Can the new gate match my fence?

We can discuss a compatible style and material. Exact matching to aged components or finishes is not guaranteed.

Does custom building include an automatic opener?

No automated operator or access system is assumed. Identify that requirement separately; it is not established by the ordinary gate-building scope.

Can the opening be changed too?

A changed opening or surrounding fence work needs to be part of the defined project. It is not automatically included with constructing the gate.

Is staining or painting included?

Only if agreed. The chosen finish, preparation and coating area should be identified alongside the construction work.
